2011 Wk 17 vs. Detroit

image I have deliberately skipped week 16 because we played the Bears and the Bears still suck so badly that I don’t want to waste any of my time writing about them. (I’m being facetious of course). In actual fact, it was a Christmas Day game that came through down here on Boxing day and when it’s summer time and Santa Claus has brought the kids new bikes, the best thing to do is hit the beach and take them for a ride, right?

That, and the fact that the Bears game didn’t actually mean anything in the scheme of things anyway. We won, or, more importantly we weren’t spooked by the loss last week, so everything was peaches again. Pretty simple if you ask me! (Matt Flynn photo credit: AP Photo/Jim Prisching. The Detroit game was just as surprising to me as the KC game was I have to say. Only this time, the surprise was all good. With Aaron, Greg, Randall and James Starks all out on O and Charles and Clay both out on D, I didn’t worry too much about whether we’d win or lose to be honest. The fact that we did indeed win, in the circumstance that we did, with Matthew Stafford passing for 520 yards and Detroit trying desperately to avoid the sixth seed, I though was incredible.

image And then of course there was Matt Flynn.  It was kind of like when Aaron was backing up Brett. You knew that he was too good to stay in that role for too long. And even though I think we all knew that Matt Flynn was good, I challenge anybody to openly admit that they thought he was going to have the sort of game that he did.

The most remarkable thing about his performance though was the records that he broke for single game yardage and touchdowns. Of course all of us completely committed Green Bay Packer fans will know the answer to “who holds the all-time passing records” when in a few years time we find ourselves at a sports bar playing mid week trivia and enjoying a beer or two. With a history that includes Super Bowl winning quarterbacks such as Bart Starr, Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers though, there won’t be a person in the country that will answer those questions with the name Matthew Flynn. And the fact that he did it in his first and only start of the season made it even more spectacular I have to say. (Donald Driver photo credit: AP Photo/Jim Prisching. Buy from the NFL Store.)

What I really got a kick out of in this game though, aside from the continued pass attack and touchdown after touchdown from both quarterbacks, was the comraderie shown by Aaron and the rest of the team towards Matty. The way that number 12 and number 10 laughed, joked and chatted their way through the game was special. I don’t believe that would’ve happened back in the good old days, that’s for sure.

image And what I took away from things on the Detroit side of the ball, is that they are every bit as dirty and ill-disciplined as I thought they were. I think, only because they’re winning at the moment, that I dislike the Lions more than the Bears and Vikings. It’s just something about the way they carry themselves.

Anyway, despite my lack of updates through the final weeks of the season, I have been a religious watcher of our favourite team like I am every year. Same with every football themed show on ESPN and every Packer themed station on the WunderRadio iPhone App – thank you ‘WDUZ The Fan’. I couldn’t be happier with the way the season panned out and I’m super excited about the post-season. I’ll leave my thoughts on that for the next update at least.

Hoping all is well, wherever you are in the world. (Jordy Nelson photo credit: AP Photo/Morry Gash. No Link.)

Thanks for giving your opinions regarding our beloved Packers. I fully concur with your analysis of the Lions and the emotions on the Packer sidelines which will help in our quest for yet another Lombardi Trophy. I didn’t think it could be possible to find another fan with as much passion for the Packers as I. Believe me, I have found there are many fans with as much passion & more. GO PACK GO
