What in the World?

So here we are again, weeks since the last update despite it feeling like only days have passed us by. And, though it feels like I say this every time, what a couple of weeks it has been. Summer is slowly fading away, work days are getting longer, Ben’s homework is getting harder and all the while we continue to run out of hours in the day! I say that ‘cause I’m sure it’s the one thing we all have in common. Heck, it’s the middle of March already. Can anbody believe that?
As for what we’ve witnessed online and in the news over the last couple of weeks it’s been disturbing to say the least. Poor Christchurch in New Zealand has crumbled, we’ve seen civil uprising in Egypt and Libya, with the latter being gunned down by their own leader and of course the earthquake and potential nuclear meltdown in Japan.
On the Wisconsin front there has been the labor disputes triggered by Scott Walker, as I’m sure nobody here needs to reminded of and then in the NFL, a work stoppage where the NFLPA seems to have left a reasonable offer on the table to effectively shut the league down and throw us fans (those responsible for the estimated $9B in revenue) wondering what to think and when to think it.
And that’s just an overview! Oh yeah, and the iPad2 was released aswell. There you go Steve, we can revolutionise the world together..... again.
Though I feel like I’m about ready to discuss all of those at much greater length I’d say the best thing to do is stick to what I really know. The Scullino family and Green Bay Packer football. It’s worked so far, why not keep the proverbial ball rolling.
So we’re locked out huh? I can’t say I’m surprised to be honest. This whole negotiation, which I now refer to as ‘The Great Negoti’aint’ seemed like it was destined to fail right from the start. I mean, if we take for instance two of the most obvious parts of this discussion then we could say, one, the players were never going to agree to 18 games and two, the owners were never going to open their books. Case closed, see you in Minnesota (the court’s location for those that don’t know). Honestly, that’s how I saw it. If they couldn’t sort this out in the 3 years they had prior to last week, they weren’t going to do it overnight.
All of that aside I do believe that this will be sorted well before the new season is scheduled to start. I say that for two reason. Firstly, the players are rich and the owners are rich. And from what I think I know about rich people, they like to get richer. And secondly, we have us, the fans. Not that I believe we are of any genuine concern to the owners and, in particular, the NFLPA. Where I do think they will have some concern though is our perception of them and their percieved money-grabbing ways. Only for so long can you take away something so dear, to so many people, before those people start to turn their backs on you. They know this, that’s why their rich. And the longer this goes on, the more likely fans are to revolt. I believe they probably know this too. Bottom line is, if this season kicks off when it’s supposed to then they’ll keep getting that little bit richer and we’ll still like them that little bit that we do… for the most part at least. It’s win-win-win. Yep, we get one in there too.
As for the Scullino family over the last couple of weeks, life has been great. We’ve enjoyed the outdoors and will continue to do so whilst we can. The boys have been great with their schooling, swimming and scooting and Kel has been there for all of us every step of the way. Also, we’ve become quite the checkers players as you’ll see by the photo. We had a little care package posted to us by our mates Tezza and Robbo and let’s just say the checkers set, Packer vs. Bears, has gone down a treat! Thanks guys…
As for me, work is busy and keeping up to date with the book and emails has been a task in itself. I am happy now though that I’ve settled back into somewhat of a routine so that I can work on a project or two that I’ve been hoping to get started since I returned. But I’ll post about that again next time.
Oh yeah and the Rugby League season started last week too. I follow the Cronulla Sharks and as much I really, really do love them, they’re a horrible team. If they were in the NFL, Buffalo, Carolina, even the Detroit Lions would have them for dinner. We were beaten by 28 in our first game on Sunday. The 2nd worst performance of the 15 teams playing. It’s going to be a long year!
That said, it won’t be too long before the next post. Stay warm until then…
